Image upscalers for Mac, compared

Compare paid image upscalers for Mac by method, price and workflow: MacnifyIt next to Pixelmator Pro, Photoshop and Lightroom, Topaz Gigapixel and ON1 Resize AI. MacnifyIt's Exact and Clarity methods use non-generative Lanczos-3 resampling, recalculating pixel values while keeping the composition, then a bounded sharpening of the edges already in the picture — no regenerative AI. Enhance (AI), MacnifyIt's optional third method, estimates added detail with a disclosed model, and its AI detail slider (10–100 %) sets how much of that estimate you keep. AI upscalers estimate detail, and their results vary by model and settings.

Use case and dimensions
Marketplace listing: 600 × 600 → 2,400 × 2,400 at 4×
Method and honest expectation
Pick Clarity for bounded sharpening of existing edges; no missing detail recovered. Check labels and seams.

Supplier/catalogue thumbnail: 275 × 183 → 2,200 × 1,464 at 8×
Method and honest expectation
Pick Exact when product fidelity matters; source softness remains. If inadequate, request the supplier’s larger original.
Use case and dimensions
Approved AI draft: 512 × 512 → 2,048 × 2,048 at 4×
Method and honest expectation
Pick Exact to avoid invented detail. For a fuller appearance, try Enhance (AI). Contains AI-estimated detail. Check it at 100 % before you export. Reapprove the result.
Hero dimensions do not guarantee usable detail or marketplace acceptance. For print, 2,400 px at 300 PPI gives 8 inches, not a quality guarantee.

Which one fits the job

A larger version of an image you have already approved

MacnifyIt’s Exact and Clarity methods. Nothing is invented: the larger file is the same picture, resampled in linear light, with every edge kept within its source. Check it at 100 % in the compare view before you export.

Detail the source never had

Contains AI-estimated detail.

Every AI upscaler estimates it, MacnifyIt’s Enhance (AI) included, and every estimate can change faces, text, textures and product details. MacnifyIt says so on the export and lets the AI detail slider decide how much of the estimate you keep.

Photos you already edit in Photoshop, Lightroom or Pixelmator Pro

Their Super Resolution features double the size once per image, inside the editor. MacnifyIt takes the finished file to an exact size or to 2×, 4× and 8×, a folder at a time, straight from Finder, with a job receipt for every export.

A quick one-off resize

Preview is built into macOS and will do it. MacnifyIt is free to try with a dozen full-resolution exports, no account and no time limit, so the comparison costs nothing.

What the $29 buys

Contains AI-estimated detail.

A resize is easy; a result you can send to print is not. MacnifyIt is for work where the outcome matters: Exact and Clarity’s non-generative resampling, Enhance (AI) when you want more, exact output sizes, the Finder menu, folder batches with an Export Queue, saved recipes, the 100 % check, exports that keep colour profiles and metadata, a flatten colour picker for transparent sources, and a job receipt for every export. Try it on your own files before paying.

MacnifyIt against each one

MacnifyIt vs Topaz Gigapixel

Gigapixel’s models add detail the source did not have; that is the point of the product, and the reason its results can change faces, textures and text. MacnifyIt’s Exact and Clarity methods never invent detail: the upscaled image is the same picture, resampled. When you do want estimated detail, MacnifyIt’s Enhance (AI) is a disclosed, adjustable option marked on every export. Gigapixel is a subscription, US$149 a year on the Personal plan and US$499 on Pro; MacnifyIt is US$29 one-time with 12 months of updates.

Contains AI-estimated detail.

Coming from Topaz Gigapixel? A side-by-side on price, method and workflow.

MacnifyIt vs Pixelmator Pro

Pixelmator Pro is a full image editor with an ML Super Resolution feature. MacnifyIt does one job and does it from Finder: resampling to an exact size or to 2×, 4× and 8×, for one file or a whole folder, with a receipt that records how each export was made.

MacnifyIt vs Photoshop and Lightroom

Adobe’s Super Resolution doubles width and height once per image with machine learning and writes a DNG; Photoshop’s Image Size dialog offers classic resampling. Both need a Creative Cloud subscription. MacnifyIt is $29 one-time, needs no other software, resamples in linear light to exact sizes, and batches folders straight from Finder.

MacnifyIt vs ON1 Resize AI

ON1 Resize AI pairs AI models with Genuine Fractals resampling inside a photographer’s toolkit. MacnifyIt keeps the choice explicit — Exact and Clarity never invent detail, Enhance (AI) is disclosed on every export — and runs the whole job on your Mac with no upload and no download.

Contains AI-estimated detail.
