MacnifyIt vs Topaz Gigapixel

If you want AI models built to rebuild faces, old scans and low-resolution photos, and a subscription suits you, Topaz Gigapixel is made for that. If you want to pay once for a Mac app, choose between plain resampling and an AI method, and run folders from Finder, MacnifyIt is the closer fit. Both can be tried before you pay for them.

How the two approaches differ

Gigapixel is an AI product. Its models estimate detail that the source photo does not contain, which is how it can rebuild a face in a small portrait. It is also why you should compare the result with your original before you rely on it.
MacnifyIt lets you choose. Exact and Clarity recalculate pixels from the pixels you already have, so the larger file is the same picture at a bigger size and soft areas stay soft. Enhance (AI) is the optional third method: it estimates additional detail on your Mac. Contains AI-estimated detail. Check any AI result at 100 % in the compare view before you export it.

Pick Topaz Gigapixel if

  • You work with faces, old scans or heavily compressed photos and want models trained for them.
  • You use Windows as well as Mac.
  • You want it as a plug-in inside Photoshop or Lightroom Classic.
  • You want seat management or full commercial use with no revenue limit (Topaz’s Pro plan).
  • A subscription suits how you pay for software, and you want new models as they are released.

Pick MacnifyIt if

  • You want to pay once. US$29 covers one Mac, personal and commercial use, and 12 months of updates.
  • Your job is a bigger version of an image you have already approved: product photos, artwork, AI-generated images for print.
  • You want to start with plain resampling and add AI only when you ask for it. Enhance (AI) is there when you do. Contains AI-estimated detail.
  • You process folders and want exact output sizes, a Finder menu and a queue.

Is Topaz Gigapixel worth it?

It depends on the images. On Topaz’s annual plan Gigapixel costs US$149 a year. If you regularly upscale portraits or archive photos, a model built for that can justify it. If you mostly enlarge clean sources (product shots, illustrations, AI images) to a print size, try a plain resample first: you may not need a model. Try both on the same file and compare them at 100 %.

Questions

Is there a Topaz Gigapixel alternative for Mac with no subscription?

MacnifyIt is US$29 once for one Mac, with 12 months of updates. It is a different kind of tool: it offers plain resampling and an optional AI method rather than a catalogue of AI models. Contains AI-estimated detail on every Enhance (AI) result.

Can I still buy Topaz Gigapixel with a one-time licence?

Not new. Topaz ended sales of perpetual licences on 3 October 2025, and its pricing page lists subscription plans only (both checked 24 Oct 2026; see the sources below).

Does MacnifyIt use AI like Topaz Gigapixel?

Its Exact and Clarity methods do not: they resample the pixels you already have. Its Enhance (AI) method does estimate detail on your Mac, and marks the export. Contains AI-estimated detail. You choose the method for each job.

Can I try MacnifyIt before I buy?

Yes. The trial gives you 12 full-resolution exports and unlimited previews, with no account and no time limit.

Where does MacnifyIt process my images?

On your Mac. No images are uploaded for processing, and the app sends no telemetry. Activating a licence and the roughly monthly licence recheck connect online.
