Product image sizes for Etsy and Shopify

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and tall, and says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels to avoid showing lower in searches. Shopify accepts product images up to 5,000 × 5,000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB, and suggests 2,048 × 2,048 px for square images. Both come from the platforms’ own help pages, quoted below with the date checked. If your photo is smaller than the platform recommends, enlarge it before you upload.

Two practical notes that follow from this page. A transparent PNG should be flattened onto a background before upload; MacnifyIt has a flatten colour picker for transparent sources saved as JPEG. And a 1 MB guideline can sit awkwardly with 2,000 px photos, so check your export’s file size.
Etsy’s page also has an image authenticity section. It says a listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, that other photos may be edited with tools “including AI” to adjust lighting or colour, crop or resize, or change backgrounds, and that editing must not hide flaws or make the item look different from what the buyer will receive. It suggests noting in the listing description if you used AI to edit listing photos. Read the page for the exact wording.
